Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at support@uhsgfa.org if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Dates for the 2026 season are yet to be determined.  Season will be starting in August.

Teams will be formed based on either the number of girls registered according to school proximities or by coaches who create a team. Teams will be formed all along the Wasatch Front.

UHSGFA is working with various schools along the Wasatch Front to host games on the high school football fields.  Games will be held at American Fork, Cottonwood, Lehi, Mountain Ridge, Park City, Skyridge and Timpview.

Rules can be found here.

It is recommended to wear football or soccer cleats, mouth guards are required, and soft shell headgear is optional. Teams will be using an Intermediate size 7 football.

Ask your Athletic Director. The first step is to find out if your school already has a flag football team. If you’re not sure, ask your school’s Athletic Director, Principal, or other staff member.

Join an UHSGFA team. Sign up for information on a team here.

Ask your Athletic Director. First, approach your high school Athletic Director or Principal (or other staff member) to express interest.

Gather resources. Contact UHSGFA and we will let you know the right next steps, which usually include:

  • Finding a head coach
  • Forming a team (10-15 athletes per team)
  • Funding for practice equipment, team kits, etc.
  • Become familiar with the rules of the Association which can be found here.

Support the joint efforts of your students and Athletic Director.

Gauge Interest. Survey other students to see if they’d be interested in playing flag football. Host an informational meeting for interested students and parents to gauge interest.

Secure Funding. Ask the school for help in applying for grants or other funding sources.

  • Look into sponsorships from local businesses.
  • Organize a fundraiser to cover the costs.

Volunteer. Volunteer to be a coach or official! These roles are critical to putting together a successful flag season.

1. Increased Opportunities in Sports
Flag football opens the door for more girls to get involved in athletics. Because it’s affordable and accessible, many schools find that flag attracts participants who may not have played a sport before. In fact, studies show that nearly half of high school girls who join a flag football team are trying out organized sports for the very first time. It’s an exciting way to bring more students into the athletic community.

2. Skill and Character Development
Playing flag football helps build more than just athletic ability. Girls learn important life skills like leadership, communication, resilience, and teamwork. These experiences translate beyond the field—whether in academics, other sports, or future careers. The confidence and character developed through competition can have a lasting impact.

3. Pathway to College
High school flag football can open the door to future opportunities at the collegiate level. Nearly 60 colleges and universities across the NCAA, NAIA, and NJCAA are offering women’s flag football programs, with scholarship opportunities available. Participation in high school provides the foundation to compete at the next level and, for many athletes, the chance to earn a college education at a reduced cost or even for free.
